Multiple application pools for ColdFusion possible in the same IIS website?

$

I would like to set up a single website with CFM11 under IIS8.5

In this website there are several CFM applications, each under a different "Application" subfolder. For security purposes, monitoring and separate maintenance shutdowns per application, these would all need their own "application pool".

However, this means that these applications should run under a different application pool than their website root node. In IIS this causes a 403.18 exception:

HTTP Error 403.18 - Forbidden

The specified request cannot be processed in the application pool that is configured for this resource on the Web server.

Most likely causes:

•An ISAPI filter or custom module changed the URL to run in a different application pool than the original URL.

•An ISAPI extension (or custom module) used ExecuteURL (or ExecuteRequest) to run in a different application pool than the original URL.

•You have a custom error page that is located in one application pool but is referenced by a Web site in another application pool. When the URL is processed, it is determined by IIS that that it should have been processed in the first application pool, not the other pool.

•The Web site has multiple applications configured. The application this request is configured to run in is set to run in an application pool that does not exist.

All works fine if the "applications" in the subfolders run under the same application pool as the website root. However that is not my preferred setup... The behaviour is consistent over all CFM-applications that I deploy, no matter how simple they are...

Two questions:

- is coldfusion actually looking to "higher" folders than I expect it to? (and can that be avoided)

- any hints or experiences on how to avoid / solve this issue?

CF10 App server running after reboot; but website unavailable until service restart

Hello, everyone.

I recently returned to a job I previously had after several months at a different job.  Upon my return, I inherited someone else's dev system (my previous dev system, apparently, had been reimaged and given to someone else, after I left.)

This system originally had CF9 server on it (the ColdFusion9 folder is still here) and now has CF10.  Using the built-in web server (no IIS, no Apache.)

Every time I boot/reboot the system, I can see in Computer Manage System that CF10 Application Server is, indeed, running.  But if I try to open any of the pages that I am working on, I get an error message that the site can't be found.

I go into Computer Manage System, go to Services, right-click the CF10 Application Server, choose "Restart", wait for it to finish, and voila!, I can get a working page.

Does anyone know why this is happening, and/or how to remedy it so that CF will work immediately after boot/reboot without going to restart the service?

Thank you,

Jrun.exe at 99% CPU, Website unresponsive

I'm running ColdFusion MX 6.1 Updater with IIS 5 on a Windows 2000 Server (P4 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM). Recently I decided to install updates/hotfixes that I'd been behind on (it was running 6.1 without any updates). I installed the 6.1 Updater, then proceeded to install the hotfixes on this page, minus the ones that didn't apply (IIS 6, random database fixes):http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=b3a939ce (everything above 6.1 Updater, of course)

I also modified the JVM arguments and Scheduler arguments as recommeded on this page:
http://www.sargeway.com/blog/index.cfm/2004/10/19/CFMX-Performance

Currently, the JVM arguments are as follows:
quote:

-server -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -Xbootclasspath/a:"{application.home}/../lib/webchartsJava2D.jar" -Djavax.xml.parsers.SAXParserFactory=com.macromedia.crimson.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl -Djavax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory=com.macromedia.crimson.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFac toryImpl -XX:NewSize=64m -XX:PermSize=32m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+DisableExplicitGC

Min JVM heap size is set to 256MB, Max is 512MB. I'm running J2SDK 1.4.2_11 (I was running 1.4.2b28 before, or whichever version was distributed with MX 6).

So, the server runs fine for a while, but without any warning, JRUN.EXE starts using 99% of the CPU, and the website is effectively unresponsive. This goes for about 5 minutes, and then JRUN.EXE seems to go back to normal, yet IIS still won't respond to any requests.

When this first happened, I tried stopping and starting the World Wide Web Publishing service, but it was unresponsive. I had to use a third-party utility (pskill) to stop INETINFO.EXE, at which point it restarted automatically, and web pages were served as normal again. If I killed jrun.exe (with the same utility) while it was using all of the CPU, this would also fix the site's issues.

Looking through the logs, the only thing that looks significant around the same time is a few "Connection Reset" entries in \runtime\logs\default-event.log, but these could be due to people hitting Stop because the page is taking too long to load.

What's awesome is that I have a test server configured exactly the same way (same software, same hotfixes, same JVM configuration), all except for the CPU (P3 ~400Mhz), and it hasn't had any problems whatsoever.

So, can anyone give me some insight as to why this might be happening?

coldfusion.mail.MailSessionException

In last couple of weeks, have had 2 occassions where cfmail not work, generating following error:

Error Diagnotics: An exception occurred when setting up mail server parameters. This exception was caused by: coldfusion.mail.MailSessionException: An exception occurred when setting up mail server parameters..

Only way have found to take care of this is to reboot CF server. (CF MX 7, latest)
Tried several searches on topic. Found others having same problem, but no one has answer other than reboot.

Some with problem wondered whether had to do with large attachments. Mine is independed of size of mail and whether has attachment.

Not a problem I can duplicate, nor does there seem to be any event tied to the 2 times this has occurred. Host master who has been with CF for years where I have my server says he's never seen this before.

Appreciate any help/thoughts. Thanks

Performance Tuning

I have 1 CF 10 server 64 bit running on IIS 7.5 on a Win 2008 R2 VM w/ 4 Gig Ram on 4Ghz of processing. The box hosts 5 websites with not too much traffic.  I've been experiencing Service unavailable errors about once per day and only on certain websites. I restart the CF App Service and all is well again.  All 4 of the websites have the same code with just a few variables difference to get different data.

I've made some adjustments in the server. For example I set min and max JVM Heap size to 2048.

Any ideas what I can do to get things running with more stability?

Help me figure this hack out.

So as i was opening my presents with my family Christmas morning when my web server emailed me to let me know that a file had been created in my /CFIDE/ folder. This file was h.cfm and it was a nifty little tool used to scan files - copy files - dump SQL passwords - run commands - upload files ect....

My setup is CF9.0.1 on win server 2008 with mySQL5.5 . The servers only purpose is to host a few websites for my company. I poured over my IIS logs and could not find any trace of a connection to the webserver while this was happening. I then started looking at the http.log file in coldfusion server and found that it contained 2 entries at the time of the attack. Both looked like this... note i've removed the IP of the server. This file is the file that was uploaded to my server.

25-Dec-2012    6:54 AM    Information    jrpp-6969  Starting HTTP request {URL='http://IPAddress:80/CFIDE/h9.txt', method='get'}

There was nothing before this connection and nothing after it.  It looks like some how my server was told to make a call to here.  Nothing in any logs regarding the use of the h.cfm, no loggs in IIS showing suspicious page hit before and nothign suspicious after.

Am i missing something??? this is driving me nuts! The other weird thing about this attack was that they didn't touch any websites they copied the ColdFusion9\updater_backup\ folder and a few other odd things off the server.

Any insight into anything that went on would be helpful... even if it's just a guess that points me in the right direction.

Thanks,

JB.

CF8 & MSDE SQL Server DSN Connection Error SOLVED!!!

$

Getting the following error trying to add a CF DSN to SQL Server?

Connection verification failed for data source: datasource_name
java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]Error establishing socket to host and port: localhost:1433. Reason: Connection refused: connect
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]Error establishing socket to host and port: localhost:1433. Reason: Connection refused: connect

There are several steps in order to make ColdFusion 8 and MSDE SQL 2005 Server

1. TCP/IP is not enabled by default. When looking in SQL Server Configuration Manager it appears TCP/IP is enabled by there is a second place that it has to be enabled.
2. The TCP/IP port is dynamically assigned each time the service is started, if they are no errors it the port number stays the same but if there is an error the port number is dynamically changed the next time the service starts.
3. You have to add your dsn login username and password to the database in order to connect without using the sa username and password.

Steps to get DSN setup correctly.

1. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager
2. Expand the SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration Group
3. Click on Protocols for SQLEXPRESS
4. Right click TCP/IP in the right pane and select properties
5. On the protocol tab under enabled set to yes and apply.
6. Disable dynamic port assignments by following the instruction below:

If enabled, the default instance of the Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine listens on TCP port 1433. Named instances of the SQL Server Database Engine and SQL Server Compact Edition are configured for dynamic ports, which means they select an available port when the SQL Server service is started. When connecting to a named instance through a firewall, configure the Database Engine to listen on a specific port, so that the appropriate port can be opened in the firewall.

To assign a TCP/IP port number to the SQL Server Database Engine
In SQL Server Configuration Manager, in the console pane, expand SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration, expand Protocols for<instance name>, and then double-click TCP/IP.

In the TCP/IP Properties dialog box, on the IP Addresses tab, several IP addresses appear, in the format IP1, IP2, up to IPAll. One of these are for the IP address of the loopback adapter, 127.0.0.1. Additional IP addresses appear for each IP Address on the computer. Right-click each address, and then click Properties to identify the IP address that you wish to configure.

If the TCP Dynamic Ports dialog box contains 0, indicating the Database Engine is listening on dynamic ports, delete the 0.

In the IPn Properties area box, in the TCP Port box, type the port number you wish this IP address to listen on, and then click OK.

In the console pane, click SQL Server 2005 Services.

In the details pane, right-click SQL Server (<instance name>) and then click restart, to stop and restart SQL Server.

7. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
8. Connect to your local copy of SQL Server
9. Expand the Security group
10. Right click login. Select new login.
12. Enter the dsn login name you want.
11. Choose SQL Server Authetication.
12. Enter the dsn password you want twice.
13. Disable user must change password at next login
14. Choose default database if you like.
15. Click User Mappings in left pane.
16. Click databases you want login to have access to.
17. Click ok.

You should now be able to add your CF DSN using localhost for server and the port number you put in earlier. Default port number is 1433.

You can view which port number SQL is listening to at this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\SQLEXPRESS\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib\Tcp
tcpport

You can test connectivity to the sql server by typing telnet localhost 1433 or the port number you selected at a command prompt. You should get a blank screen not an error.

Hope this helps, I spent 3 hours figuring it out.

Timed out trying to establish connection

Hello,

I need to access a Unidata database residing on an AIX unix server using CF from a Windows server.  I currently access this same db/server from CF on my linux server with no problem. I set up the new datasource in CF Admin on the windows server using the same parameters I use on my linux server:

JDBC URL =
jdbc:ibm-u2://<servername>//datatel/coll18/production/apphome;dbmstype=UNIDATA;
DRIVER CLASS = com.ibm.u2.jdbc.UniJDBCDriver
DRIVER NAME = UniJDBC

and put in the same username and password that I use from the Linux. The datasource will not verify, I get this error:

Connection verification failed for data source: hb2504_colleague
java.sql.SQLException: Timed out trying to establish connection
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: Timed out trying to establish connection

The network administrator says that the windows server and AIX server ARE able to communicate and there is no firewall in the way.  If this is not a network issue, is there any other cause?  Do I need to change the parameters in the
datasource since it is a windows server?  (the unijdbc driver was installed on the windows server and then CF service was restarted).

thanks much for any help,
Julie

CF 9.0.1 Update - Cannot Start CF Application Server

$

Running a dev box with W7 x64. i7 8GB ram.  Had CF 9.0.0 (x86) running.  Able to get to /CFIDE/Administrator.cfm and add DSNs, etc, but could not access CF websites due to 403 errors.

Installed 9.0.1 x64 update and now CF Application Server service will not start.  (Error Code 2) and the Win event log posts "The ColdFusion 9 Application Server service terminated with service-specific error The system cannot find the file specified."

Checking the service properties, it is looking for: "C:\ColdFusion9\runtime\bin\jrunsvc.exe" and I verified that it was there.

Looking at the forum I saw that it may be a JRE error, so I edited my JVM config to "java.home=C:/ColdFusion9/runtime/jre6"  (Copied the ../jre6 folder from C:/program files/java/ in case the config file was tripping over the space in "Program Files")

Tried toggling IIS6 compatability on/off - No joy.

I've spent a couple of days chasing this (Tried to load CF9 x64 and it was a bust.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cannot start Coldfusion 9 Application Server Service

Note that this is for a Dev server.  Not vital, but super annoying.  I found my machine had been restarted due to Lumension.  This is normal.  However, since I imported a .car file from the old CF8 server directly to this CF9 Dev server I had not rebooted or restared the CF9 service.

I found these error messages in the Event viewer:

The ColdFusion 9 Application Server service could not be started.  Check the server "coldfusion" log files for more information.

and

The ColdFusion 9 Application Server service terminated with service-specific error The system cannot find the file specified..

I checked the JRUN logs and cannot find any logs pertaining to anything matching today's timestamp nor anything out of place that appears to be the cause.  Nothing in CF logs either, mostly because CF never got up to running status so no logs could be generated.

I thought I found the culprit in this post, http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/thread.cfm/threadid:61223 ... but the fix had no effect.  I didn't find anything in my search using grep outside of the JRUN temp folder which a single .xml file had an invalid Coldfusion8 path.  Fixing the path or deleting the offending temp files didn't cure the problem.

I've also tried moving all the root files that was moved into the /ColdFusion9/wwwwroot/ directory out and trying to start the service, but same error and failure occurs.

I have not tried reinstalling.  I did install the CF9.0.1 update and it was working just dandy until this restart.  There are no other computer problems experienced that I can tell and not other errors were found in the event viewer.

JVM Heap size settings

Recently I got a VPS server and I'm running Coldfusion, the website was running fine until it got more and more traffic and I started to encounter 'OutOfMemory' exceptions.

I thought simply to rise the memory of the VPS server, but this didn't help.

After doing some Google searches I found a setting in de CF Admin settings to set the JVM Heap memory. It was on the standard: Max Heap size 512MB and Min Heap size was empty. After playing around a bit I have now set it to Min 50MB and Max 200MB, good things is that I'm not getting the 'OutOfMemory' exceptions anymore. So far so good!

But with about 50 active visitors on the website, the website starts to get slow. The CPU usage is only about 8% (Windows Taskmanager), also the taskmanager show only about 30% of the 3GB RAM in use.

So I'm thinking that my values could be tweaked to use more of the RAM. Honestly I don't understand these JVM Memory heap settings, so I have no clue what is a good setting for me.

I found a CF script that displays the memory usage, the details are:

HeapMemoryUsage-Committed    194 MB
HeapMemoryUsage-Initial  50.0 MB
HeapMemoryUsage-Max  194 MB
HeapMemoryUsage-Used     163 MB
JVM
-FreeMemory    31.2 MB
JVM
-MaxMemory     194 MB
JVM
-TotalMemory   194 MB
JVM
-UsedMemory    163 MB
MemoryPool-CodeCache-Used  13.0 MB
MemoryPool- PS EdenSpace-Used   6.75 MB
MemoryPool- PS OldGen-Used  155 MB
MemoryPool- PS PermGen-Used     64.2 MB
MemoryPool- PS SurvivorSpace-Used   1.07 MB
Non-HeapMemoryUsage-Committed    77.4 MB
Non-HeapMemoryUsage-Initial  18.3 MB
Non-HeapMemoryUsage-Max  240 MB
Non-HeapMemoryUsage-Used     77.2 MB
FreeAllocatedMemory:30mb
TotalMemoryAllocated:194mb
MaxMemoryAvailable to JVM:194mb
% of FreeAllocatedMemory:16%
% of AvailableMemoryAllocated:100%

My JVM arguments are:

-server -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false-XX:MaxPermSize=192m-XX:+UseParallelGC-     Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home}/../-Dcoldfusion.libPath={application.home}/../lib

Can I give the JVM more memory? If so, what settings should I use?

Thanks very much!!

CF 10 very slow

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 IIS 6.0 32 bit server Dell 2850 4 G RAM - as a test platform.

I was running CF9 standard normally on the server with good page performance.

I installed CF10  standard (Plus the mandatory update) on the server and now the admin screen and all web pages take over 30 sec to load.

Task manager shows mostly idle at 99%  - Single NIC active with a single IP address in use.

I remove cp10 and restarted cf9 and the performance is back to normal.

Ideas?

Adobe Coldfusion8, JRun4, m32.exe and m64.exe taking 100% of the CPU

Hello

on two CF8 Servers which we are running for several years I could see that recently we have two processes inside the Jrun4 folder cfusion82\cfusion.ear\cfusion.war\CFIDE\m32\m32.exe and cfusion82\cfusion.ear\cfusion.war\CFIDE\m64\m64.exe taking 100% of the CPU. Action appears randomly and occurs on two server without any user interaction. Killing those processes does not seem to have any effect on the functionalty of the system.

Also in the coldfusion reactor I am not able to see any request which would be connected to this behaviour.

Does anyone know what are these processes?

Strange thing is that the files have been created just recently and on each system/instances in different days.

Thank you very much for answer!

"You tried to access the Developer Edition from IP address" error on Enterprise

I was looking through the coldfusion-out.log this afternoon on my CF10 Enterprise edition, and found multiple messages like this:

License Error. You tried to access the Developer Edition from IP address (xxx.xx.xx.xxx). Already two IP addresses are accessing ColdFusion concurrently. The Developer Edition supports access by any IP address, but only two at a time, apart from the localhost. The additional IP addresses accessing ColdFusion are: xxx.xx.xx.xxx,xxx.xx.xx.xxx,xxx.xx.xx.xxx

I recognize none of these IP addresses.  Also, I didn't think there was a developer edition installed alongside Enterprise.  I only access the Administrator by remoting into the server and calling it up locally.

In the administrator settings under Security/Allowed IP Addresses for ColdFusion Administrator access, I have two addresses specified....neither of which are referenced in the error.

Does the error message just refer to unsuccessful attempts to log into the Administrator (there's nothing in the log file to specify an unsuccessful login) -

or, will the IP address be registered as accessing the developer edition if the login screen is even loaded?

Thanks....

Verity Indexing Error, Permission Denied

I'm trying to launch a new server with CF7 on Linux. It's an identical setup to my current server. I've created a verity collection and when indexing it using a cf file I get the attached error message. It appears to be at the line where I'm assigning the custom1 field. This exact script works on an identical configuration on a different machine. I've checked the permissions for the folders where the index is stored and they look to be okay. Any ideas about what permissions are the problem? Please help!

hi

We moved from an older Dual PIII box under Win2k to a Dual Xeon under Win2k3.

First step was to move Sybase ASA 9.0.2.33xx dbs from the old box to the new, leaving ColdFusion 6.1 MX on the old box connecting through ODBC. This workd flawlessly for weeks.

Yesterday I also moved the front end (coldfusion 6.1 to cf 7.0.2) to the new box

Now, we get problems like this in the Sybase ASA server log

Of course, the application stalls as well and our users are upset.

We staged that new box and found no problems, not with ASA. With CF 7, we had several isuses, some of them are still not quite clear.

Now that we wanted to go productive, those errors occur.

Note that the ODBC settings for those DSNs allowed both connections, Shared Mem and TCP/UP localhost, because cf is now on the same machine like the db.

My question now is: Where should I try to find the error ... on ASA or CF7 side?

Any hints welcome!

Thanks

In the coldfusion administrator I get "The ColdFusion ODBC Server service is not running or has not been installed."  message when I open an existing ODBC datasource. However when I look at the service running on my machine both the Coldfusion 8 ODBC Agent aswell as the Coldfusion 8 ODBC Server services are running!

Configuration:

- Windows Vista Home Edition

- Coldfusion 8,0,0,176276

- Apache 2.2

- ODBC System DSN: Virio Incidents, which points to a local excel file on my system

It used to work fine and as any good user I haven't changed anything :-). So has any one any ideas what is going on?
